A Snow Day in The South

Here in North Carolina a snow day is a nice event. It doesn’t happen that often and when it does a flurry of excitement abounds. Of course not all people get excited over it but they are grumps! I for one love the snow. I guess it is just like with most things too much of something can be just too much. I don’t take it for granted because it is so rare and my whole philosophy is if it is going to be cold and miserable nature might as well give me something pretty to look at. All the things you have probably heard about the southerners and snow are probably true. No we can’t drive in it and I for one don’t care to! I just wanted to share a little of my snow joy with you with a few pictures my husband and I have taken around our little town in rural ,eastern North Carolina of the two snow days we have had so far this winter.

Lattice Inspiration: Bringing it Inside

Lattice and trellis work is usually seen in an abundance of exterior spaces. I absolutely love it and even better I love how more and more it is being used in interior spaces here in the United States. The charm and character it can add to a room is beautiful! You can use it as a focal point more like an art piece or you can transform an entire space with it. Lattice is a framework or structure of crossed wood or metal strips and it’s first known use was in the fourteenth century. There are the usual types you are probably use to seeing at the big box home improvement stores but they can also be custom made to fit in with almost any decorating style. I really love how it can add spice to an otherwise flat room by giving it  three dimensional appeal. When the lattice is painted or the surface underneath is painted or wallpapered the addition of lattice can produce some amazing results. I have found many amazing rooms with this lovely detail and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I am hoping to do this in one of my bathrooms because it is rather small and boring at the moment.

I hope you have been as inspired as I have and are maybe entertaining the idea of bringing this lovely detail in to your home in some way, shape or form. I really want to put some up on top of a beautiful wallpaper in my bathroom and am also considering updating a dated room divider with perhaps a custom lattice treatment. When I do it I will be sure to blog about it. Happy Decorating!

Some “WORDS” on Decor

I remember when letters were hot and they still are. What is really trending now is words and typography. I am seeing them everywhere and on everything! I personally love the trend because I love quotes that are funny or inspiring and I especially love how one simple word can create an atmosphere or evoke a certain emotion. There are a lot of ways you can add them in to your decor and embrace the trend yourself. You can find them on art, wood, pillows, cork, made out of rope, on furniture and one of my favorites, on walls. A simple word on a wall or a wall of words, it’s your choice! A simple, yet complex word like love, displayed on a display table ,can be the focus of a lovely vignette when  it is surrounded by photos of friends and family. Your home already reflects your personality and you can pop it up a notch and make some statements as well with the words you use. Here are some ways others have made their homes quote-worthy!

Some More Inspiration

Some More Inspiration

A little can go a long way or a lot can make a bold statement! I really love this trend in decorating and I hope it stays around a long time. In a way I think it is a sign of the times. A lot of people prefer to text than talk so I am a little out of trend as far as that goes. I prefer a good conversation. With life as fast paced as it is now  we don’t always stop and say the things we mean or need to say. Perhaps if we add it to our homes it will be a daily reminder to say what we mean to say and to choose our words carefully.

Get Creative With Washi Tape

I must confess I had never heard of Washi tape until I started seeing it on Pinterest and I am so thankful I did! These beautiful tapes originated in Japan and are made of papers made from using plant fibers such as bamboo, hemp, rice, wheat, the bark of the gampi tree or the paper mulberry. It then has acrylic glue added to it and becomes a product similar to masking tape because it can be removed from most any surface. There are so many creative ways it can be used and it comes in an abundance of beautiful designs. A quick google search will yield many sources for purchasing this beautiful tape. The tape averages about five dollars a roll and of course there are deals to be had if you search for them. I gathered some of my favorite ideas from Pinterest to get your creative juices flowing.

A Fresh Look at Plaid

I must admit I am absolutely mad about plaid. A classic and timeless pattern that I am happy to say has not gone out of style. I love the warmth and pattern it brings in to a space. You don’t have to always think of a traditional home or farmhouse with it either. You can go bold with it on walls, flooring and furniture or bring it in with pillows and  bedding in smaller doses. However you go about it your space will surely come to life in a trendy yet timeless way. One of my favorite ways to work with plaid is to pull out one of the strongest colors from the pattern and use it as the main color in your room. It will give it that oomph and help when choosing the rest of your decor and other patterns you may add in as well. I have gathered some visual inspiration for what I think is a more updated look that you can gain with plaid. Who knows maybe your home will be clad with plaid before it is all over with.

Elle Decor

Elle Decor

This year you will likely see it everywhere because it has come back in to the spotlight. Trend Tartan as they call it is officially in fashion again and I for one am thrilled with the news. Even if it wasn’t I would still love it! So don’t be surprised if you don’t notice it on everything, from home decor and accessories, to the runway it is back.

A Fresh Start As Art

If your house is anything like mine at some point something has been broken. I can’t tell you how many times it has happened around here. My first reaction is always “OH NO”! You can turn that in to an “Oh Wow” with a little bit of time and creativity. I have been a fan of mosaics for a long time now and I am going to start doing some creative projects after the new year has begun. I am also a true believer in up-cycling and saving things from the landfill if possible. I have gathered some pictures from Pinterest on some of the many ways you can turn your broken dishes, glass, ceramics and pottery in to  works of art. To be quite honest some of these ideas made me want to go and break something but there is no need for that! You can buy the pieces online if you don’t have enough and picking up mismatched plates at thrift stores and flea markets are a great idea as well. I have a ton of ideas flowing through my head on what I can make and maybe you will too after getting some inspiration.

Beadboard Love

Beadboard is one of those details that I could have in every room of my home in some way that I personally would never grow tired of. There are many ways you can bring in to your home and it adds a lot of charm and character rather inexpensively. There are many good how-to’s on the internet for installing it yourself and many companies now sell paper products that give you the look without having to install it. One of the trends I have noticed as well is using paper or installing it in patterns such as herringbone and chevron. This gives it a more contemporary and updated look. Many furniture companies incorporate it in to their designs as well and this is a great way to bring it in to your home if you don’t want it on your walls or if you rent and can’t make any big changes to the existing walls. A beadboard ceiling adds a lot of character and is so beautiful. Whether you opt for the classic white, painted or natural colored wood you can really adjust it to any kind of home decor and style. I believe it can look completely at home even in modern spaces to soften them up a little bit. I have gathered several images to show you different ways you can bring it in and to show how really versatile it can be.
